75Market hopping has become popular weekend pastime in Sydney. Weekly, fortnightly or monthly markets that suit both the bargain hunter and the serious shopper have sprung all over the suburbs.
Caps, souvenirs, t-shits, jewelry, vinatage and second hand clothes, handmade cards, gifts, leather jackets, high class art, you name it, there is something to suit every taste and budget.
Here is a list of the most popular markets in the city of Sydney.
BALMAIN MARKET
- Where: Corner Darling Street and Curtis Rd
- When: Every Saturday
- Opening Hours: 8:30 am to 4 pm
The market is held every Saturday in the grounds of the Balmain Congregational Church in the shade of fig tree said to be more than 150 years old. This compact market attracts both locals and tourists. Fees from the stallholders contribute to the ongoing restoration of the church which was built in 1853.
There are lots of stalls selling children ‘s wear, second hand books, contemporary and antique jewelry, arty mirrors, recycled stationery, stained glass, mobiles and Chinese healing balls. There is food hall where you can find fresh and aromatic Japanese, Thai, Indian and specialist vegetarian dishes in the making.
GLEBE MARKET
- Where: Glebe Public School , Glebe Point Road, Glebe
- When: Every Saturday
- Opening Hours: 10 am -4 pm
This market is a treasure trove for the junk shop enthusiast, second hand clothes, accessories, books and a lot more. The atmosphere is bright and popular with inner city folks. Get there early for bargain porcelain, there are few fashion students who sells their creations. You will also find handmade bags, hats and jewellery. Second hand clothes are a good buy here. There is no shortage of food stalls and live music.
THE ROCKS MARKET
- Where: George Street, The Rocks
- When: Saturday and Sunday
- Opening Hours: 10 am – 5 pm
At weekend rain or shine, a sail-like canopy is erected at the top end of George Street, transforming the area into an atmospheric marketplace. Get there early to beat the afternoon crowds. There are over 100 stalls whose items are unique rather than inexpensive. Quality is a priority here. Look out for wind chimes, pewter picture frames, pub poster, clothes, bags, wooden toys and jewellery.
Every Friday in November the Rocks Market hosts “Markets by Moonlight” a combination of night markets, live music and outdoor bars and food stalls.
PADDYS MARKET:
- Where: Corner Thomas and Hay Street
- When: Every Wednesday to Sunday
- Opening Hours: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Haymarket in Chinatown is the home to Paddy’s Market. This is one of Sydney oldest market since 1869. Every weekend the market has about 800 stall selling everything from fresh produce to electrical product and leather goods.
Early birds will get the best flowers, fruits and vegetables and seafood. They are now open on Wednesday.
BONDI BEACH MARKET
- Where: Bondi Beach Public School, Campbell Parade, North Bondi
- When: Every Sunday
- Opening Hours: 10 am – 5pm
Started in 1993, you will find original designer clothes, exotic imports, handmade jewellery, arts and crafts and a lot of vintage clothes especially funky 70’s, retro furniture and vintage clothes. Arrive early as some of the stalls are already set by 9:00 am.
PADDINGTON MARKET
- Where: 395 Oxford Street. Sydney
- When: Every Saturday
- Opening Hours: 10 am – 4 pm
This market which began in 1973 takes place every Saturday come rain or shine in the grounds of Paddington Village Uniting Church and its neighboring school. Many young designers come to have a stall here hoping to launch their career and display their wares.
There is always something tempting here, there are children’s clothes, leather goods, unusual belts and accessories, handmade cards, candles, pottery, new and secondhand clothing and an array of other arts and crafts.
Whatever you are looking for, you will likely to find it here from designer bag and clothes or a tarot card reading to Oriental massage, and it is unlikely that you come home empty handed.
SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE MARKET
- Where: Western Boardwalk, Sydney Opera House
- When: Sundays and Public Holidays (subject to weather and outdoor events)
- Opening Hours: 9 am - 5 pm
You will find arts and crafts in a spectacular setting. Quality and fine hand made or hand finished Australian souvenirs. You will be able to talk to the artist or to the makers about their work.
