Pictures of Orchids

Like the rose, the orchid has long held a priviledged in man's heart. During the Ancient and Medieval period, the orchid was prized for its medicinal uses. It was during the seventeenth century that the tropical orchids first made its way to Europe, as part of the many exotic treasures brought by the explorers. Ever since, Western botanists have studied, catalogued, cultivated and experimented with this plant.

Today, there is a huge range of splendid orchids to choose from, many of which will flourish on your window sill. Contrary to the popular belief, orchids are adaptable and not nearly as difficult to grow as most people think and thanks to the breeders in raising new varieties, orchids are now less expensive than ever before and the great variety of colours and shapes to choose from.

I took some of the pictures below during the Sydney Easter Show. Enjoy browsing.

Did you know?

  • The name orchid was derive from the greek word testicles = orchis.
  • Theophrastus (370-285 BC) a botanist in ancient Greece used the term in his work "Investigations of Plants," to describe a group of plants with testicles-like roots which are today known as Orchidaceae. This ancient term became the source of the name of an entire family of plants.

I purchased my 1st orchid plant today for only $10. it is a phalaenopsis schilleriana, it has large magenta blossoms with red leopard spots on yellow along the labellum and and lateral sepals and red leopard spots on white along the lateral lobes of the labellum. gorgeous. I have been surfing for tips on how to care for it when I saw your beautiful photos.

I find that many people try too hard with plants. These are some of my favorites. Thanks for the great photos!

Wonderful as always MM. I am a lover of plants, but I must admit that I am afraid to purchase orchids as they are expensive and I would not like them to die on me. Flowering plants on a whole I have difficulty with, I don't know why.

And don't forget, the great fictional detective Nero Wolfe had a penthouse greenhouse just for his orchids! (I love those mysteries!) ;) Thanks for info.

Beautiful flowers, just do not live next door to a grower of them.

We lived next door to an aged lady who had a glass hour full of the most beautiful Orchids.

We had a swimming pool with a spa. Before we could swim we literaly had to clean the pool, as the wind blew everything from next door.

The good thing in this incidence was this kind old lady was always giving Val These beautiful Flowers at least once a week.

I did not tell you her glass house was as old as the lady and was in worse state of repair than the lady.
