Most Baby Boomers and Generation X will always treasure memories of childhood holidays when family are bound together playing simple card games.

Before the emergence of the internet, mobile phones , IPod and the Wii, rainy days especially on holidays can be made to quickly fly by with just a set of ordinary playing cards.

One of the classic card game that I have learned is SNAP. It is an amusing and sometimes annoying. When I was young I always like to win, but now that I am an adult, it is annoying when the children always win.

Anyway, for those of you who have not play this game it is not too late to learn how.

You need:

Players: Two or More

Equipment: A standard 52 card deck

Difficulty : Easy if you concentrate

Duration : 5 minutes

STARTING THE GAME

The dealer shuffles the cards thoroughly and then deals them face-down to each player in turn until all the cards have been dealt out.

It does not matter if this mean that some players have more cards than others.

  • The player on the dealer’s left turns the top card of their pile face-up and places it next to the pile.
  • The player to that person’s left does the same, and so on, around the table.
  • If any two cards on a face-up pile have the same value (suits are irrelevant) the first person to say or yell “SNAP” takes both files and adds them to the bottom of their face down pile.
  • Play then continues with the player to the left of the one who cried “SNAP” turning another card face-up.

If a player runs out of face-down cards they can still call . “SNAP” when appropriate, in an attempt to get back into the game .

However, any player who has neither a face-down pile nor a face-up one is out of the game.

Any player who makes a mistake by yelling "SNAP" when there are not two cards of the same value on display, has to pay a forfeit of one card from their face-down pile to every other player.

The game is won by the player who captures every card on the table.

Hints and Tips

The faster the game is played the more amusing and entertaining it is. However it is agood idea to have an adult standing by to adjudicate on which child shouted “Snap” first.

This is a new game to me - looking forward to trying it. Do the kids win because their reflexes are quicker?

Nice hub.

I think it's great that you describe this very simple game, whcih can give hours of fun to children and maybe the adults from time to time with their children. It's definitely a game of my childhood, when I spent hours having lots of fun and sometimes quarrelling over who snapped what first.
